What does your dollar-priced software really cost in Rand?
Short answer: a US-dollar subscription is not a fixed Rand price. You pay the dollar price converted at the day's exchange rate, plus your card's foreign-transaction fee on top, so the real cost is higher than the headline number and it moves every month. The default rate is illustrative: enter today's rate for an accurate figure. Card fees vary by bank, commonly around 2.5% to 3.5%.
Why the number is bigger than the price tag
- The exchange rate moves. A $20 plan is R360 one month and more another. You cannot budget it precisely.
- Your bank adds a fee. Foreign-currency card payments typically carry a percentage fee on top of the conversion.
- It compounds across tools. Three subscriptions mean three conversions and three fees every month.
What you can do about it
Check whether each tool is actually earning its place, and whether a Rand-billed alternative does the job you use it for. A tool billed in Rand has one fixed price with no conversion or card fee, which is easier to budget.
